Round 3 of PETRONAS MAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championship will be held at Sepang International Circuit (North) this weekend. Riding alongside the riders of the CP150 race category would be Kasma Daniel Kasmayuddin of PETRONAS Sprinta Yamaha Maju Motor.
If round one only awarded him with a “DNF” status, round 2 which was held at a technical circuit in Tangkak gave him hope to continue with his perseverance and determination when he went on to showcase a striking performance consequently landing himself at the second spot on the podium. His achievement at the circuit was a picture of positivity for this season considering his unsatisfactory performances in the last three rounds of last season including the one at Tangkak during round nine.
Evidently, Kasma has certain traits and characteristics to ride competitively on a technical circuit. However, the upcoming race which will be held at a high-speed circuit may pose a different kind of challenge for the Johorian. In the race that was held at Sepang circuit last season, Kasma only managed to secure the sixth spot with a gap of 0.579 seconds from his contender. In a much bigger and wider circuit, the challenges no longer consist of speed but also takes into consideration the ability to move quickly and optimise the performance of the machine.
Commenting on the race, Kasma said, ““For me, the main challenge at Sepang circuit would be in terms of the overall machine because the circuit is quite wide and it is a long-straight. It does not really require much technical skills to be honest like the ones needed in smaller circuits. Therefore, the machine and luck play an important role in the coming round. In terms of the team’s machine, I think we have already obtained a slight advantage compared to last season so I am quite positive that we will be able to compete competitively and keep up till the end of the race at the circuit. Apart from that, we have also gained an important achievement in terms of handling and better durability of the suspension.”
“On my part, I don’t see that I have more advantage than the other riders especially on a circuit ground as wide and big like Sepang because everyone is equally on par and their machines are optimised. But what I am sure is that Akid would be my biggest contender because he has an added advantage on his machine. I will do my best to maintain my position among the front troops during the race. If possible, I want to finish on the podium. My goal this season is to collect as many points as possible and if luck is on my side, to take home the champion trophy.”
ANOTHER RACE WIN FOR HAYDEN HAIKAL
A third race win and a 6th placing in last weekend’s Round 2 of Idemitsu Super Turbo Championship in Thailand (19-21 May) at the Chang International Circuit in Buriram has consolidated Malaysian teenager Hayden Haikal’s lead in the overall point standings.
With three wins in four races so far, Hayden and the #437 Wing Hin Motorsports’ Toyota Vios continued to exert their dominance in the Junior (Normally Aspirated) Class for normally-aspirated engines up to 1550cc and remains one the top overall race contenders in a sea of turbocharged and more powerful cars.
The race weekend however, could not have gotten off to a more challenging start for 18-year-old Hayden. A big off during the free practice session on Friday had the team working in overdrive with only three hours to complete repairs in time for the qualifying session. Hayden and the team bounced back to still post the third fastest time in Class.
Race 1 on Saturday got off to a promising start with Hayden fighting for the lead in his Class and running as high as 12th overall until transmission issues half way into the race left him with only 5th gear and fighting to get to the finish. He ended the 12-lap race around the 4.554km Chang International Circuit 21st overall and 6 th in class.
“I had a good fight with the Class leader and I managed to get away from him when all of a sudden the car wouldn’t downshift from 5th gear. Thankfully, we managed to resolve the problem for the second race on Sunday,” said Hayden.
Race 2 on Sunday proved to be the great redeemer when Hayden’s pace had him at the head of his Class and placed 8th overall amidst the professional and turbocharged drivers. Hayden finished 2nd in Class but was later promoted to first when the race winner was penalized for an infringement.
“The start of the race was chaotic with a lot of cars being taken out on the main straight. I was fortunate I managed to avoid the carnage and get through safely before the red flag was brought out. When the race resumed I was battling with the top three cars in my Class and it then came down to the task of picking them out one at a time,” said Hayden.
Making his debut in the Idemitsu Super Turbo Championship in March, Hayden had sealed back to back race victories in the opening two races of the Idemitsu Super Turbo Championship.
With three race wins and a 6th placing after four races, Hayden retains his lead in the overall point standings in the Junior (Normally Aspirated) Class with the third and final round of the Idemitsu Super Turbo Championship to be contested from 16-18 June 2023 again at the Chang International Circuit.
“We will be regrouping and with this weekend’s experience and learnings, the focus will now be on going for the overall championship win.”
YOUNG MALAYSIAN RACER HAYDEN SETS SIGHTS ON CLINCHING HIS FIRST INTERNATIONAL TITLE
Young Malaysian racer Hayden Haikal will be digging deep this weekend when he competes for the prospect of being crowned the overall champion in the Thailand Super Eco saloon car series at the Buriram Chang International Circuit.
With three 2nd places and two race wins in 6 rounds of racing so far, the 18-year-old is currently 2nd in championship just 20 points behind Na Dol Vatanatham who has 105 points to his tally. Both drivers have proven to be dominant in the series and their races results almost identical, but Vatanatham has the advantage of one extra race win as a result of Hayden’s misfortune in scoring any points in Round 2 due to a technical issue with his Honda Brio.
“Mathematically, I have a good shot at winning the overall title in the Thailand Super Eco Series but it’s going to be a very tall order, especially with the dominance championship leader Vatanatham has demonstrated over the last six rounds. Anything is possible is the last two races of the season. I just have to remain focused, drive my own race and let the math sort itself out,”
Said Hayden who admitted that while he would be gunning to end the season on a high, the prospect of coming in second in only his first full season competing in Thailand would be equally an achievement he can be proud of.
The final two rounds of the Thailand Super Eco series will consist of two 12-lap races on Saturday and Sunday (10 and 11 December). A total of 23 drivers will be taking to the grid with Hayden being the only foreign driver. For a first timer competing in Thailand, Hayden has quickly established himself as one of the series’ favourites with his matured driving and consistent results.
The Thailand Super Eco Series is run on both street and permanent circuits. Hayden’s Thailand Super Eco Series campaign had kicked off in June with the first two rounds held at the Bangsaen street circuit before rounds 4-6 moved to the Buriram Chang International Circuit. With five years of experience competing on street and permanent circuits in the Malaysian Vios Challenge racing series however, making his debut at the Bangsaen Grand Prix proved anything but intimidating for Hayden who confidently raced to a second place finish in his debut.
“Overall, it has been a fantastic year of racing for me, having won the Super Sporting Class for professional drivers in the Vios Challenge and recently being placed second overall in the Sepang 1000KM Endurance Race. And now, being in contention for the championship in Thailand in only my first year racing abroad is just phenomenal.
