SIC REVS UP TO WELCOME FANS BACK TO PETRONAS GRAND PRIX OF MALAYSIA

Tuesday, 16 August 2022 – The 23rd edition of the longest-running international motorsports event, PETRONAS GRAND PRIX OF MALAYSIA 2022 happening on the 21 – 23 October was officially launched at the Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS by the Minister of Youth and Sports (KBS), Yang Berhormat Dato’ Seri Ahmad Faizal bin Dato’ Azumu today.

The 23rd edition of the Malaysian Grand Prix marks PETRONAS’ debut as title sponsor having reached an agreement with MotoGP™ rights holder, Dorna Sports earlier this year. The Sepang International Circuit (SIC) also announced Malaysian rider, Syarifuddin Azman (Damok), has been granted a wildcard entry in the Moto3™ World Championship. The 21-year-old is currently ranked second in the FIM JuniorGP™ championship standings.

This year marks the first year of PETRONAS as the Title Sponsor for the Grand Prix. SIC is all set to #WelcomeHome all the local and international motorsports fans to Sepang after two years hiatus due to COVID-19 pandemic and we will ensure the quality of Malaysia Grand Prix is at the highest level.

With no Malaysian riders competing full season in the Championship, I believe Damok will be the pull factor for Malaysians to cheer fellow Malaysian on the grid.

Special off-track activities for fans starts with the pre-event on Wednesday race week i.e; Public Cooking Contest showcasing talented MotoGP™ riders in Pavilion Kuala Lumpur. The ever-popular race weekend activities i.e; the Public Pit Lane Walk and Riders’ Autograph Session will take place on 21 October 2022 where fans can get up close and personal with their favourite riders.

PETRONAS is excited to see the return of MotoGP to Malaysia and it gives us great pride to headline the event, as the championship is synonymous with passion, innovation, pace and performance – values that resonates well with PETRONAS. As such, to celebrate the occasion, PETRONAS has lined up a series of thrilling family-friendly experiences on and off the track, including around KLCC which will be announced in due course.

The Grand Prix title sponsorship offers an opportunity for PETRONAS brand to grow and help re-energise Malaysia’s sports tourism and provides a unique platform for us to showcase PETRONAS Primax – the Official Fuel for the Moto2 and Moto3 championships – to the world.

Fans can anticipate getting their hands on special merchandise items to take home at the much-awaited Mega MotoGP™ Carnival with over 100 renowned brands and the Night Track Tour experience on Friday, 21 October to Saturday, 22 October 2022 is back on sale.

This year, SIC is proud to be FIRST Grand Prix to present a new lifestyle experience and a curated festival feel that combines local food and culture, outdoor, live music, art installations and unique activations under one roof.

The interesting catch for this year is the #MalaysianGP2022 Mega Lucky Draw contestwhere two lucky winners will win Yamaha NVX and Y15ZR bikes with SIC limited-edition livery worth RM22,000.

Azroy Raises the Bar at the Qualifying Session

Azroy Hakeem Anuar of Honda Yuzy Idemitsu made the fastest during the qualifying session of Round 5, PETRONAS Malaysian Cub Prix Championship which was held at Jempol Circuit.

The CP150 rider put on a good show at the circuit. PETRONAS Malaysian Cub Prix Championship made its comeback at the circuit after a two-long-year hiatus and Azroy grabbed the chance at marking his territory with a new lap time, clocking in at 44.119s.

Despite the scorching hot weather at Jempol, Azroy was full-on, taking charge of the circuit while making the best of the laps. Azroy is now positioned fifth overall after he scored the fourth spot in Round four with a total of 42 points.

Azroy however crashed before the chequered flag was raised.

The second fastest spot belongs to Md Izzat Zaidi Md Salehan of PETRONAS Sprinta Yamaha – CKJ Racing team, clocking in at 44.130s.

Md Haziq Md Fairues of PETRONAS Sprinta Yamaha Maju Motor logged in third fastest with 44.336s.

For the CP125 category, Md Haziq Md Hamdan of Honda KC Racing took the fastest spot in the qualifying session.

Haziq who sits at the sixth position overall showcased his skills at the Jempol circuit when he hit the fastest, clocking in at 46.681s.

In the last round, he took the second spot which was also his first win on the podium.

Meanwhile, in the Wira KBS category, Md Danish Aiman Zamrul of PETRONAS Sprinta Yamaha – 31 Racing once again made the fastest in the qualifying session.

Danish displayed confidence at the Jempol circuit although he did not possess any experience on the circuit. His confidence has certainly been boosted since his win in Round 4.

Throughout the qualifying session, Danish maneuvered his machine skillfully in the technical circuit and succeeded in maintaining his speed. He clocked in at 47.598s.

Coming in second and third were his teammates. Md Syamil Amsyar Md Iffende logged in second fastest at 47.714s while Md Adam Haikal Jahar made the third fastest at 47.726s.

As the most accomplished touring car driver on track, Mohammed Fariqe Hairuman has so far endured a very challenging start in his first season competing in the Vios Challenge one-make race series.

This however, has made the 39-year-old champion even more determined to step up his game and to make his mark with three more races to go in the season. A sixth place finish in yesterday’s Race 1 in Round 2 of the series has been his best result so far.

“The biggest difference for me is the speed involved and this is not something that has been easy for me to adapt to. In a GT or touring car, it’s all about power. You can be on the brakes and have instantaneous power but in a one-make race car like the Vios, what you really need is momentum. For me, this is essentially going back to basics and reminiscent of my first time racing in a Group N production saloon car in 2000”
